THE MESSAGE NOVEMBER, 2004 NO.36
THE CHUI TAI FAN SERIES.
THE YEN SWEE LIM EDITION

November is another month named after a great Roman emperor. He was a less known emperor called Tiberus Caesar. In the earlier Roman calendar it was the 9th month of the year. Remember the earlier Roman calendar that had only 10 months in a year!
Cheers.

SPONSOR CHUI TAI FAN

Our new series sponsor is Chui Tai Fan. He is the MESSAGE's great fan. Once when I met him he lifted my spirit sky high. He jested, "Heh! Suy Sang you have so much to write. You can write stories as if they just happened overnight".
Pen & Paper

Tai Fan, thanks for your interest and enthusiasm on what I write. I wish to keep Mesians informed by scribbling something that is light. Thanks for your generous sponsorship of a series of 5. The series will run into year 2005, right! So I have more reasons to write, eh?

THE CARNIVAL

Finally, the great event of the year for the school and the town materialized after months of preparation. Food stalls, games stalls, jumble sales and more were set up. From morning till night people flooded the school. The fiesta was on. There were funs, food and even a singing contest to entertain all.

Contest Queen

LIM YEW PING - QUEEN

The highlight of the night was the crowning of the Queen of the Carnival Lim Yew Ping clinched the title from six other contestants. She won in terms of her popularity; actually by votes cast in terms of money!

The carnival netted RM 1,600 for the school. While most of the earnings went to the building funds for the new block of four classrooms many equipment were bought for the benefits of the students. They included 10 brand new Royal brand typewriters. The Form III students immediately reaped the benefits by learning typewriting.

One whole issue of the M.E.S.SAGE was devoted to the results of the carnival. There was published a long list of thanks to donours both in kind and in money down to the $5.00 category.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Anybody knows where the once M.E.S. Carnival Queen Lim Yew Ping now is?

Bus Ride
FROM JOHOR TO KUALA LUMPUR

CHAN SEE PHONG nowadays resides in Johor. One day he arrived in Kuala Lumpur. See Phong gave me a call. That's the spirit old pal. Call me when you are around. Then we could sit down and chitchat for a round.

COLLECTING LEE SAI KAN

I called Lee Sai Kan and Wong Lan Chan. We wanted to meet and reminisce of the good old days. To pick up Sai Kan I drove down to Setapak from PJ. There I entered the Genting Courts condo. I ascended to the 12th floor. I shocked Sai Kan when he opened the door. Then off we drove over to the hotel where See Phong lodged, in Pudu.

Red Car
HEADING TOWARDS PJ

"Hai, See Phong, long time no see", That was to See Phong from Sai Kan and me almost simultaneously. See Phong's missus also came to accompany.

As I drove down Pudu Road and passed the ever busy Petaling Street we were talking away. See Phong and his missus seemed to find it difficult to go round Kuala Lumpur as they had spent most of of their lives in Johor. The couple was very alert to the new development in the city. See Phong's crown is more prominent now as time had wrought havoc on his hair. We drove towards PJ.

Door
I MAKE THE DOORBELL OBSOLETE

On arrival in SS2, we drove around to look for Wong Lan Chan's house. Finally we were at her front gate. I rang no doorbell. I made full use of my modern communication gadget and phoned her instead. She came out from within. She welcomed us in.

Bow To Each Other
MEETING LAN CHAN HEAD ON FIFTY YEARS ON

Wong Lan Chan aka Mrs Loh is the same active and talkative lady like she was before. She looks like when she was young. Yet she kept on saying that she could not remember many old time people and things. After almost 50 years through life unmet, unseen and totally cut off from any contact, we began a grand session of chitchat. We recalled many people and happenings.

PEERING INTO HISTORIC SHOTS

To aid our already clogged and slow functioning brains, Lan Chan brought out three big albums of "ancient" photographs taken in the 1950's. There See Phong, Sai Kan and me had a good look see of ourselves in our teens. We were talking of the good old days. Someone mentioned our patriarch Mr. Miles. We were all amazed by his photographic mind. He could still remember many of us by names.

Professor
SHE TESTS HIS MEMORY

Lan Chan cut in and said once she pretended not to look in the direction of our mentor in an out of the blue encounter with him. But Mr. Miles lashed out aloud, "Hey! Lan Chan". Lan Chan had to reply and there followed a most friendly tete-a-tete session that lost quite a good while. It's his good memory that we all admire. Lan Chan enquired of me how is Ted Miles. I said I had not met him for two weekends. The last time I saw him he was fine.

DINNER TIME

Our conversation at the round table at Lan Chan's house seemed to have no end. Finally she had to herd us out to a restaurant to continue our blah, blah, blah bout.

TWO TOO HIGHS, TWO TOO LOWS

Health and taking care of the body dominated the next conversation round. Each one of us had our complaints of some sort of bodily ailments or rather dysfunction. There were two highs and two lows. The upper conditions were hypertension and too high cholesterol. The lower complaints were low memory and slow reflexes.

Lady Doctor
CAUTION: VICTIMS OF DIABETES AND HYPERTENSION - LEE SAI KAN

Sai Kan stressed on the must continue medication for diabetes and hypertension. For he had his bad experience of nursing his late spouse for years after a stroke, when she went into a vegetative condition.

Operation
A SECOND OPINION MAY SAVE YOU FROM THE KNIFE - CHAN SEE PHONG

See Phong said whatever the diagnosis of an affliction always go to another physician for a second opinion. Only after seeking what other doctors say then only is it wise to make major decisions like an operation or amputation. Very wise advice indeed, to avoid a quick exit. See Phong had seen a neighbour who saved an only leg after consulting a second physician who advised against a second amputation.

TO MEND HER VOICE-BOX

And Lan Chan would be going for an operation of her vocal cords where an unusual growth had lodged. We wished her good luck that she would mend her vital organ that gives her the gift of the gab. Also, she had to recover fast to fly off to gad about in some foreign country abroad.

LO AND BEHOLD! THE LUCKY MR. LOH
Doctor With Chart

Lan Chan's spouse Mr. Loh has had his own complaints but always says he is fine. He would not follow some of the doctor's advice. But from what Lan Chan said she has her tactics to persuade him to get the proper medication when he is sick. That is why nowadays he has a good appetite. Even before we could walk back to the house, Loh had sneaked away to buy his supper snack. "Supper is his sleeping pill", said the ever caring wife.

A LONG WAY TO GO

It was already past nine when finally we left Lan Chan who repeatedly begged for another chance to continue our endless parlance. But it was getting late. We have to leave her for we have still a long way to go.

GO WHERE?

First, I drove the couple back to their hotel through the clogged traffic in KL. On the way we caught up with lost time and missed out topics to brag about. Sai Kan and I bade them farewell outside their hotel.

Then the two of us still had a long way to cover. Yet I had only one more step to go: to drive to Setapak (that is the nearest place to go in Malay). I had to drive Sai Kan back to his 12-storey high coop. This I have a duty to do because Sai Kan had the following experience that was most frightful.

SAI KAN MUGGED BY THUGS
(From the mouth of Lee Sai Kan)

White Bus

"One day I was traveling seated in a bus. From the back on my nape, I felt a touch. I turned round and saw a burly man. A shiver went down my spine. I was ordered to follow the guy.

The huge and burly man pointed something on my behind. He asked me to follow him out of the bus. I was charmed. I felt stupefied. I just followed what he suggested. I was asked to enter a car. The man and his gang consoled me and said I would be home after that.

Club Hit

They drove me off to an unknown spot. It was in some bushes. Later I discovered it was up the slope in Wangsa Maju. They took my wallet. They hit me on the back of my head. I fell and passed out. Maybe they presumed I was dead.

Throbbing Head

When I woke up next, I found myself in bed. It was in the hospital. Some Good Samaritan had found me and sent me there. I did not even know whom. I touched the back of my head. I felt two big painful bumps pounding like mad. To recover I had to take a long rest.

My wallet and documents were gone together with RM500 in cash. Then only I realized I had been drugged and mugged. Nowadays I seldom go out in the busy, noisy and dusty city of uncertainty and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,". Thus Sai Kan ended his story of the robbery.

"Oh my, you must have spent the night in the wild!" chipped in Suy Sang, bewildered.

"Nope, this happened in broad daylight, under the brilliance of the midday Sun," answered the humble and calm Lee Sai Kan.

GETTING READY FOR THE SHOW OF PAST GLORIES

Hand Talking

We are going to hold a photography show in our mentor's bungalow. When? Of course, on Christmas Day, the photos of our old M.E.S. and all past year glories will be on display.

SEE, HOW HE WORKS ON THE JOB IMMEDIATELY

One day, when I called upon our mentor, this was what I saw. Mr. Miles had ransacked his store and brought out a whole lot of photos. They were portraits of many a student, group photos, scenery and all. Of course they are all black and white prints for in those days of ancient photography colour photos were still unheard of.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli is running around covering much ground. He has been driving up and down between Cameron Highlands, Kuala Lumpur and Bentong. He got the old black and white photos rephotographed in black and white too. Looking for black and white films nowadays is not easy for that celluloid is now a rarity. Then enlargement of the photos brought the figures in the pictures into greater clarity. Looking at the samples he had brought down, the job is superbly done.

Mr. Miles would have them poster-framed in lots of a few photos per frame. They would be rigid enough for hanging up for display on Christmas Day.

The cost?

Anyone of you can chip in with any amount that you think is fitting. Just send your contributions in.

Come, Mesians cheer up our master! At least you could give him a tinkle and praise his untiring efforts in getting ready the photos.
