THE MESIAN MESSAGE 154 - SEPTEMBER 2014

This is the cover of a little book that I have written about our mentor Dato' Ted Miles from the time he set foot on Malaysia to now.

 Cover Book

In it you will find passages/anecdotes like those that follows:

When once he was asked for the umpteenth times by a curious admirer why he came to Malaya (now Malaysia) and why he rooted himself here, he cooked up a tale that sounded really so tell-tale.

“I got on the wrong boat. The vessel shipwrecked in stormy seas. I was flung ashore – in Port Swettenham.” Said our great master. Port Swettenham? Where in the world is that port or rather was it jusr a rickety jetty? We could only find it in history like many places and even countries. Places like Ceylon, North Borneo, Persia have been swallowed by History. The little port you rea just now is but now the great Port Klang in Malaysia.

Ted Miles started a course of penmanship the art good American handwriting. He wrote such beautiful cursive scripts each letter of the same size as the others and in a straight line. His handwriting everyone wanted to emulate. We practised, and practised and still practised. The whole school went into a frenzy to practise writing that cursive American signature script.

The sacking of Mr Henry put the whole townsfolk into a sort of suspense. The people there were still traditionally conservative. Whatever problem it was but kicking someone out of his job in a time so short was a little too harsh from the boss. A ripple of comments riddled through the little lettered section of the Bentong community. Malay said the sacking was unfair. It was unprecedented. The man should have been given a second chance.

Within a year of his arrival the had brushed shoulders with the British High Commissioner, General Sir Gerald Templer. At the time of the British colonial supremacy, whites were not many in the country. On official occasions, the British masters held functions. There threw garden parties entertaining gentlemen, ladies and dignitaries. These functions were for high society.

Here goes a story: One day a boy complained of pain on his manhood. The master brushed the complaint aside and ignored him. He went into his office and sat down to so some paper work. The boy knocked and went in. Then and there in front of the mentor he bared it all. He unbuttoned his pants and showed a sollen rod. “Oh my Gad!” exclaimed the lord. “Tomorrow I'll take you to the hospital.” A centipede had done the deed.
